What should I look for when shopping for a new laptop/notebook?
I'm not particularly tech savvy so I hope someone can tell me what features to look for when I'm buying a new laptop/notebook. I'm going to need it for a lot of writing so I'll need the space for saving a ton of large documents. I do have an External Hard Drive but I'd like to be able to save my work in more than one place. It needs to be relatively portable since I need to be able to take it with me most days. And, the battery power has got to be good because I can spend a lot of time in places where I can't plug it in right away. I also do a lot of work/research through the internet so I need it to run at a decent speed with all the crap I'm going to have on the computer because of my work. Help?
Idea seconded: PC, not Mac. Unless you want to pay an extra few thousand for a computer with a notoriously bad battery life.
Look for a smaller Notebook Computer. If you don't have too many stringent requirements, smaller screen size will be a big help with battery life. If you're willing to do without a CD drive you might even consider a netbook, which has amazingly long battery life (since you mentioned that first). Word-processing documents also take up very little space. On the downside, most netbook keyboards are cramped, so you'll probably want to take a good look at the keyboard too.
Watch out for extended warranties that places will offer. For the first year of "paid" service they'll usually take advantage of the free service plan offered by the manufacturer, and after the first year it's not likely you'll be repairing/replacing your computer anyway. (In other words, it's where stores like Best Buy get their biggest profit.)
